I'm no graphic designer, and I'm entirely self-taught on Fireworks. But with all the web content building I do, I simply have to have a powerful image editing program. Fireworks in my choice.
I've tried numerous lesser products and some online Saas editors like Photoshop Express, but Fireworks is the only program I use that gets the job done quickly. I'm a huge proponent of cloud-based apps, but image editing is still best done on the desktop. Photoshop is overkill, GIMP is confusing and poorly documented, but Fireworks hits the sweet spot. Every graphic on my site has been through it at least once.
